Let Air Move - Air circulation helps our sweat evaporate, which helps us feel cooler. It’s key in humid climates where the air can feel stagnant. A wall or fence that allows for air passage keeps the garden cooler in hot climates. Metal screen fences, wood slat fences with spaces between or a vertical slat fence like the one pictured are all great solutions. Of course, an overhead fan also does wonders to circulate air and keep your skin feeling cool.

Block a Street View - When your home is on a busy street, creating a peaceful backyard space begins with the right fence. If you want to allow some light in, pick a fence with small gaps between boards (or even a lattice-like design) and layer lush plantings on both sides to provide additional privacy. Or try a frosted glass design, as shown here. As with privacy fencing, it can be helpful to test out the fence height you are considering before you commit.
These wood fences are beautiful yet as noted above, they will have to be maintained and eventually replaced which is a lot of work. We are working on our new designs currently to create fencing which incorporates the beauty of wood yet requires no painting, sanding, and endures the test of time.

Oiling protects and nourishes the timber, while also deepening the hue slightly to anything from a light, golden honey to a rich, earthy brown. Start by cleaning the fence using a stiff brush and soapy water, and follow with a blast from a gurney gun. When the fence is dry, use sandpaper to achieve a nice smooth finish. Wipe away any debris with a damp rag and allow to dry. Place thefencing oil in a paint tray and use a paintbrush or specialised pad to apply the oil.
If you’re looking for privacy, a higherfence is needed — 6 feet is the typical height for a privacy fence. A privacy fence will have a less direct visual connection with the house and usually engages more with the second story. Hreno also asks, “Is [the fence] intended to be a strong visual, or should it disappear?

Like a fluid steel wall, this ubermodern screen is part sculpture and part privacy fence. I absolutely love how it is integrated with the very sleek planting scheme at its base. The linear ground cover and floral bands echo the rigid vertical lines created by the steel rods.
Limit Materials - Limiting the number of hardscaping materials, as well as colours, is important to achieve a clean, simple look - too many and the scheme will feel fussy. Here we see how using the same tone of timber for the fencing and decking creates a harmonious scheme.
